Space Needle O'Deck

Background

Space Needle O'Deck was a mini design project that gives my team a hands-on practice of the brainstorming and whiteboarding phase in the design process. The primary objective is to design an application for tourists on Space Needle O’Deck to help them learn about the landmark. The secondary objective is to use the application to connect tourists to the potential points of interest in the city, such as on-going events at the Seattle Center.

My Role

I was responsible for researching user needs and gathering content. I was in charge of developing solution ideas and sketching out initial design concepts.

The Problem

The main problem presented in this project was that tourists generally find their tour to the Space Needle O'Deck somewhat boring after the first 5 minutes. There wasn't much information provided to help them learn about the building or the city of Seattle.

Our team was given the following challenges to solve. The application should:

  • Educate and entertain the tourists around the topic of Space Needle.
  • Allow the tourists to transfer and keep some forms of memory, such as photos.
  • Direct tourists’ attention to potential points of interest in Seattle.

The Ideation and Solution

Through our brainstorming, we developed and condensed our ideas down to incorporate 5 functions for the application:

  • Fun Facts about Space Needle
  • Selfie with "Seattle's history" filters
  • Seattle-related mini-games
  • History panorama of Seattle
  • Spot viewer/My Place

Based off our initial sketches, we also developed our navigation strategy: keep navigation simple. We wanted to leverage users' knowledge of typical web navigation and other iconography.
